چکیده

This article surveys a number of theoretical problems and open questions in the field of two-dimensional dilute Bose gases with weak repulsive interactions. In contrast to three dimensions, in two dimensions the formation of long-range order is prohibited by the Bogoliubov-Hohenberg theorem, and Bose-Einstein condensation is not expected to be realized. Nevertheless, the first experimental indications supporting the formation of a condensate in low dimensional systems have been recently obtained. This unexpected behaviour appears to be due to the non-uniformity introduced into a system by the external trapping potential. Theoretical predictions, made for homogeneous systems, require therefore careful reexamination. We survey a number of popular theoretical treatments of the dilute weakly interacting Bose gas and discuss their regions of applicability. The possibility of Bose-Einstein condensation in a two-dimensional gas, the validity of the perturbative t-matrix approximation and the diluteness condition are issues that we discuss in detail.

Monte Carlo simulation of O ( 2 ) φ 4 field theory in three dimensions

Using standard numerical Monte Carlo lattice methods, we study nonuniversal properties of the phase transition of three-dimensional φ4 theory of a 2-component real field φ = (φ1, φ2) with O(2) symmetry. Specifically, we extract the renormalized values of 〈φ2〉/u and r/u2 at the phase transition, where the continuum action of the theory is ∫ dx[12 |∇φ|2+ 12rφ+ u 4!φ]. These values have applicatio...

We study the ground and excited states of weakly interacing Bose gases (with positive and negative scattering lengths) in connection with Bose Einstein condensation to test the validity of using the mean field theory and Born approximation. They behave as new quantum fluids (a gas in the weak limit and a liquid in the dense limit and we study their many body physics in the dilute limit within t...

We study the weakly-interacting Bose gas in both two and three dimensions using a variational approach. In particular we construct the thermodynamic potential of the gas to within ladder approximation and find by minimization an accurate mean-field description of the dilute Bose gas. Using spin-polarized atomic hydrogen as a specific example, we obtain an improved description of the Bose-Einste...

Second-order phase transitions have universal behavior, associated with long wavelength fluctuations, for which critical exponents and other universal quantities can often be successfully calculated using renormalization group techniques.
